Chivily Reaches Softball Milestone
On Wednesday April 8, senior Caroline Chivily hit an incredible mark in the stat book for the VHS softball team – her 100th career hit.
“It felt exciting but I didn’t even know it happened when I first hit the ball,” she answered when asked about how it felt to reach the milestone. “(Coach Hemsley) just came over to me and said ‘That’s 100’.”
She may not have realized it, but her whole team knew and her brother, Philip an eighth grader at OLL, was ready to celebrate with a sign congratulating her on her accomplishment.
This milestone has not been achieved by any softball player at VHS in many years. Although he did not have official stats on who had done it in the past, Verona AD Gary Farishian reported that he could not recall a player doing it in his tenure as AD. He included in that group Jessica O’Boyle, who Verona sports fans will recall as one of the program’s best players and who went on to play division one softball at Villanova.
For perspective, consider that the softball team plays an average of about 20-25 games per year. This would mean that even a player who played in every varsity game starting in her freshman year would need slightly more than a hit per game average for her entire career to reach the impressive mark.
Besides being an exceptional hitter with a .501 batting average this season, Caroline is one of the team’s captains, and a steady presence in center field, where she has been throughout her VHS career.
Caroline, who has been a four year starter for the varsity softball team, will be continuing her successful softball career at Hamilton College next year.
